The irony of Short Sales

In the past few days here in Spring Hill Florida I have found buyers wanting short sales, and I ask myself why. After all, the time to wait could be months only to find that the home was sold to someone else by the bank's decision.
To me, straight sales must compete with short sales in order to go to contract. So, why not select say five homes, and ask for a steep discount on each. I think that one in five sellers just may say yes. Much better odds than waiting several months for one big no on a short sale that probably does not have the quality and no longer a viable market price. Does that make sense to you?
