Brooksville, FL is a wonderful example of modern Florida living, it is an old town steeped in history and tradition. Families have been land owners here for generations, estates and farms are handing down as legacy's to those proud traditions. During a day spent driving around the rolling hills on roads topped by a canopy of trees, the reminders of that history are abundant, if you know where to look.
The City Hall in downtown Brooksville, was built in 1913. The struggle to establish this as a town has encompassed several wars against worthy and impassioned foes. The men, women and children that stayed these times were of a strong and worthy character. By today's standard their days and nights were more suffered than lived, yet still they carried on and grew a town to their liking and forged it's future into today.
Today those same traditions, values and character not only survive, they are still readily apparent. "Hi!" is heard from the person behind the counter at the local 7-11. People wave as you pass on the road. You know your neighbors name and have them around for dinner on occasion. Watching the kids chase fire flies in the back yard while you sit around a small fire with a few friends is considered a fine way to spend an evening. You can see the stars on those fine clear Florida nights.
Hernando County may have it's faults. Growing pains, economic issues and peoples passion for their community are combining to make local politics much more agressive than usual. But this also shows those traditions and character are still alive and well.
We are all looking for ways to do the right thing and to do our part. The Brooksville City Council is no different. A professional appearance is part of a professional work place. The spirit of the thought is clear enough, the actual application becomes a problem.
However you feel about the issue, taken at face value , the concept is pretty basic. Respect means different things to different people but generally we all seem to share a base level. Sometimes, we need to be reminded of those basic libertys we consider to be self evident. Perhaps we all need to check our underwear.
