Report Signs of Oil Along the Coast
May 19, 2010

Florida Governor Charlie Crist is asking visitors and residents alike to report any sightings of oil along the sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.

There are many different forms of oil that may wash up on our shores to look for:

  • Tar Balls - Gooey, globules of oil. Tar balls come in different sizes and are made up of oil and debris.
  • Tar Patches - Can be a conglomeration of a number of tar balls or a type of "structure" that comes in different colors and consistencies.
  • Oil Sheen - A thin layer of oil floating on the surface of the water.

For pictures of the different types of oil that you may encounter visit the Deepwater Horizon Response website.

Governor Crist is asking that if you come across any evidence of oil please report to the State Warning Point at (877) 272-8335.
