The Gasparilla Invasion is scheduled for 11:30 today (Saturday) and the parade is from 2 to 6. It is an annual event in Tampa and quite unique. Pirates invade the area at 11:30 and the party begins!
There was an interesting story on Bay News 9 where a woman from Tallahassee attended the Gasparilla parade back in 1958 and as she was dressed as a pirate she got in free. The Washington Times took a picture of her and it was put in the newspaper. A gentleman from Tallahassee saw the picture, cut it out (not something he would normally do) as he admired the way she looked. Time went by and he put it in a second wallet and forgot about it. She ended up pursing an acting career in NY and he also moved to NY. She later got a job filing papers at, believe it or not his company. They fell in love, married and after going through some old photos, she shows him the Washington Times picture and he said "wait a minute". He still had the second wallet, took out the "yellowed" picture and said "it is you". They will be celebrating their 47th anniversary and still travel to the parade.
