State Senators are finding it necessary to ask the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) if they are able to provide any form of aid to homeowners that are suffering due to the effects of Chinese Drywall. Letters have been sent to the Administrator of FEMA, Craig Fugate, by four different senators across the nation, one being Florida's very own Sen. Bill Nelson. The letters were written in an attempt to determine if FEMA would be able to assist homeowners and businesses if a state governor, who has declared an emergency, requested it. During the housing boom, between 2000 and 2008, Chinese Drywall was imported by local businesses to be used in place of the many depleting resources across Florida and other parts of the country such as Louisiana, which was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina. Since this time, there have been numerous reports of a “sulfur-like” gas that is possibly corroding metals including wiring throughout the home; in addition to the omitted gas, health issues such as respiratory problems and nosebleeds are occurring with homeowners whose homes were constructed with Chinese Drywall. The letter from the senators was quoted as saying; “Families in our states are watching their dream homes turn into nightmares. We believe it is important to marshal all appropriate federal resources that may assist these families.”
