Taking a a vacation in the Keys of Florida during the summer months is quite common. Many folks rent property for a weekend, a couple of weeks or even a month to partake in the crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and just plain fun in the sun! However, many vacationers are finding themselves in the midst of a rental scam while searching for just the right place to stay.
Many of the scammers are advertising property that is priced just under what similar ads are advertising or listing addresses that turn out to be vacant lots or businesses.
Over the last few months over a dozen people have reported scams to the Key West Police Department. According to Steven Torrence, Community Affairs Officer, "The pricing is not always really low. The scams are usually 'just below' what the ballpark prices are, but other times they seem too good to be true. Too low."
It has been advised to be certain to call the Key West Chamber of Commerce to verify if the "renter" is known before sending any money.
