As a realtor in Hernando County, I love to see new construction, but honestly, I am on the fence on this one. There is a developer who is planning on building 3,700 single family and multi-family units with adjoining offices and commercial centers. It is called Lake Hideaway and will be bound by US 19 to the west, Hexam Road on the north, Star Road on the South and Weeping Willow Stree to the east in the Brooskville, Weeki Wachee area.
When I see that we still have 2416 homes for sale this morning on the MLS, and prices have had to drop so much, is this a good thing for a number of reasons. First of all, we need to sell those vacant homes because not only are they a sore sight to the eye, but they encourage vandalism. There are also the people who have tried to sell their homes to get our of their situation and have priced their homes for this market and have not sold yet.
I encourage new jobs and this would bring that, but would it also bring more problems because who is going to buy them? Also, we have so many strip centers sitting vacant, do we need more? It starts to make Hernando County look downtrodden. There is also plans to build a K-8 school which is wonderful, but if no one is going to occupy these homes, the current taxpayers are going to take the hit. As it is, they have a huge high school being built on 19, and I wonder what the cost of that is going to be to taxpayers.
I honestly think this should be put on hold until we can get back to a somewhat normal economy.
We will always keep you posted.
