Route 66 was called America's Mother Road. It traveled from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles.
Although pieces of it still exist today as modern roads, much has been abandoned and let to return to nature as it can or converted into public area or recreation areas. The US66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System in June 1985, after it had been replaced in its entirety by segments of the Interstate Highway System. Several remaining portions of the road that passed through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been designated a National Scenic Byway of the name "Historic Route 66", which is returning to some maps.
This truck sits in a field alongside Interstate 40 that runs through The Petrified Forest in Arizona. It and several old style telephone poles with glass insulators with no wire on them have been left, along with a few small plaques, as a reminder to a much earlier time.
